      <image:title>Work - Bed Room</image:title>
<image:caption>A much loved open plan stone and tin clad Bruny Island family shack required a small seperate bedroom for its owners. The new COR-TEN room was grafted at the knuckle of the existing cranked plan, where an existing over-exposed and under-used roof deck had previously sat. Clad entirely in Tas oak, the tapering cabin-like interior narrows to a hooded lancet window, framing a tall eucalypt at one edge and opening to an expansive water view at the other. <image:title>Work - Highway House</image:title>
<image:caption>Floating along the sheer slopes of the southern outlet, the compact single level house is arranged as an east/west elongated box with all rooms facing North for solar gain, natural light and the expansive view of the Derwent River and the city of Hobart below. Living areas are shaded in summer by both the roof overhand and custom external battened screens that slide the full length of the Northern facade. Accessed via a southern circulation spine, the internal spaces are divided into private and public areas by a central partially enclosed deck with a roof void to allow sun and breezes into the depth of the plan. A covered deck to the west provides summer afternoon shade to living areas. The two external decks that break the plan allow for a series of sliding doors and galleries of louvred windows to aid in natural cross ventilation. This lightweight timber and steel building responds quickly to heating and cooling and is well suited to Tasmania’s temperate climate. <image:title>Work - Nelson House</image:title>
<image:caption>Having purchased the last lot in a suburban street, the site presented challenges and dictated the architectural response for the project. The land was awkwardly shaped, steep, included easements and two magnificent trees which were extremely close to the boundary. The Nelson House is organised strategically across two levels to give the residence both privacy and prospect within its suburban context. With neighbors in close proximity, the existing trees formed an important role in the spatial strategy for privacy. The home is entered via a simple timber screen, which opens into a small landscaped courtyard. From here, one moves up and onto the first floor, which offers superb views to the River Derwent beyond. Moving to the rear of the property, rooms wrap around a central courtyard, which provides an intimate, private space. The sleeping wing bends with boundaries and the resultant rooms are oriented back to northern natural light and the distant water views. <image:caption>A new addition, to the previously underused north-facing side yard, organises a bedroom and ensuite around the remaining triangle slither - to create a light filled and private garden courtyard. The relocation of the new kitchen also allowing its occupants to spill out to the protected northern deck while still enjoying the easterly views to the river Derwent. <image:title>Work - Crump Treehouse</image:title>
<image:caption>The Treehouse is a hideout for two boys and their friends, held by a gum on one side and a hill on the other. Largely built from recycled materials, including a recently demolished carport, the project was an exercise in getting the most - from as little as possible. Set on a steep site overlooking the Derwent, it is accessed by duck-boards and consists of a small entry deck and a single room with a loft. A glazed facade captures the sun and view, while a timber door pops out from the roof form, allowing access to the tree and summer breeze. Lined in Baltic Pine, the cabin-like interior cocoons a sitting space and floating daybed, while the loft provides another place to climb and nap. The A-frame is generous in height - narrowing as it rises to frame the treetops and sky, while widening as it lowers to create child-friendly nooks. <image:caption>A towering two-storey granny flat sits atop a carport linked by a new glazed stair to the existing house below. The level entry bridge allows direct access from the street into the kitchen while a mezzanine bedroom with ensuite sits over. The small tiled balcony adjacent to the living and dining room offers views over the city and incorporates a flower box within the balustrade to edit out the neighboring roof. This ancillary dwelling provides independent but connected living for a cross generational family and an elderly care alternative for a much loved Grandmother. <image:title>Work - FLOODLIGHT House</image:title>
<image:caption>The brief for an extension to a 1920’s house backing on to the Hobart rivulet and Fitzroy gardens called for increased visual and physical access to its garden setting. This was in stark contrast to the flood overlay planning requirements for the floor level to be raised above the site it sought to connect with. The resulting addition sets up a series of decks and landings at height intervals not requiring balustrades and gradually spills into the immediate garden drawing in the neighbouring park through large glazing and openings. Angled fin screens capture and control distant views while providing privacy from the immediate neighbours, and allow for ever changing light and shadow and the colouring of the gardens to internal spaces. <image:title>Work - Lookout House</image:title>
<image:caption>Team: Nathan Crump, Ryan Cawthorn, Thomas Bailey + Aaron Roberts (completed while at Room11) Positioned on a previously cleared site with views towards Tasman Island and the Southern Ocean beyond, this project takes the farmhouse typology and transforms it into a hybrid courtyard house. Visitors enter through a covered threshold, experiencing views into the treed courtyard and the sea beyond, before venturing into the main living space where the full panorama unfolds. Three gable roof extrusions define particular functions within each with particular relationships to the courtyard and specific views to the surrounds. The extruded form pushes beyond the building envelope providing covered outdoor living spaces.
